Bloom 2011

Installation at Pasadena Museum of Contemporary Art

An elegy to the struggle of a single life, with its grind and pull, and momentary flashes of beauty. The darkened room is entered through a low romanesque tunnel of recycled paper bricks. Inside, a video is projected in a clockwise movement around a velodrome-like track, made of found paper shopping bags on a steel armature. The video comprises a simple, but miraculous activity: a bee swimming. The bee struggles across the watery surface, fighting to extricate itself from the watery medium. The video projection literally goes around the room in circles, at about 14 minutes per circuit.
